A different way to look inside

A small camera can make the experience feel very different.

Traditional endoscopy and capsule endoscopy answer different clinical questions. When capsule endoscopy is appropriate, it can replace the scope and sedation used in some conventional examinations with a swallowable camera and wearable recorder.

Your local provider determines which test is appropriate. Capsule endoscopy is not a substitute for every conventional endoscopy and cannot take a biopsy or provide treatment.

Capsule endoscopy, simply explained

A camera the size of a large vitamin. Thousands of images. One complete story.

You swallow a disposable capsule containing a camera and light. As it moves naturally through your digestive tract, it sends images to a recorder you wear.

01

What it can help investigate

Sources of small-bowel bleeding, inflammation such as Crohn's disease, ulcers, polyps and some tumors.

02

Why clinicians use it

Much of the small intestine cannot be seen with a standard upper endoscopy or colonoscopy.

03

Where it may be delivered

Depending on your provider, clinical circumstances and local program, the procedure may take place in a clinic or through an at-home pathway.

04

What it does not do

The capsule cannot take a biopsy or treat an abnormality. Another procedure may still be recommended.

Your first step

A physician confirms whether capsule endoscopy is right for your question.

Before the procedure, a physician reviews your symptoms, medical history and clinical question to determine whether capsule endoscopy is appropriate and likely to provide useful information. The consultation may take place in person or virtually, depending on the provider and your circumstances.

When might capsule endoscopy not be right yet?

Your provider checks for a known or suspected blockage or narrowing, difficulty swallowing and other conditions that may change how the capsule is delivered. Sometimes imaging or a dissolvable test capsule is used first.

Can everyone swallow the capsule?

No. If swallowing is difficult, a clinician may recommend a different approach or place the capsule during an upper endoscopy.

Are there activities to avoid?

Your personal instructions take priority. Patients are generally told to avoid vigorous activity during recording and MRI until the capsule has passed.

This overview is not a complete safety screen or medical advice. Your treating provider reviews your history, determines whether the procedure is appropriate and gives you case-specific instructions.

How it works
